Big Ben n'est pas le nom de la célèbre horloge à quatre faces de 106 mètres qui s'élève au-dessus du siège du Parlement britannique, mais de la cloche de 13,5 tonnes installée dans la tour, The Clock Tower. Son nom viendrait de Benjamin Hall, ingénieur et homme politique, commissaire en chef attaché aux travaux quand la cloche a été installée en 1858. Comme Benjamin Hall était très grand, il était surnommé “Big Ben”. Le son de la cloche Big Ben est dû au fait qu'elle s'est fissurée seulement deux mois après son installation, ce qui lui donne une tonalité très distinctive.

I had no idea that it was named after the bell and not the clock! It reminds me of the Liberty Bell in Pennsylvania because it was made in London, and it was cracked by the time it came to the U.S. They recast another bell, but it cracked too! It must have something to do with the shape, the metal and the weight (?). They stopped ringing the Liberty Bell not long after the crack appeared, but Big Ben rings all the time, doesn't it?
yes Big Ben rings every hours, but the quarters of an hour are by other bells. I was lucky that day, as I was there at 4 pm, I heard its beautiful chime
