Un retable est une construction verticale portant un décor peint ou sculpté. Dans une petite église d'un très joli village fleuri, se trouve un retable Flamant du début du XVIe siècle de l'école de Nuremberg, réalisé à Anvers (± 4 mètres de haut et ± 3 mètres de large). Le retable de Fromentières est classé monument historique en 1881. À l'époque, le conservateur du musée de Cluny avait offert 5.000 francs et une peinture religieuse en échange du retable. je comprends pourquoi la paroisse n'a pas voulu s'en séparer, il est magnifique !

What an amazing piece of art! I also understand not wanting to part with it. Can anyone walk into this cathedral because it seems such a piece would need to be protected against theft or damage.

That is gorgeous!! I would love to see it in person. My grandmother was born in Nuremburg! Her father was a woodworker in Germany. I always wonder if his pieces are still in existence.
